The town of Bryn Mawr is named after a Welsh estate owned by Rowland Ellis near Dolgellau. He was a Welsh Quaker who was forced to flee religious persecution in 1686 and settled along the Schuylkill River, in a settlement called Humphreysville. In 1869, after acquiring 283 acres which now make up most of this quaint little community (namely because they were needed as railroads grew) railroad agent William H Wilson renamed it “Bryn Mawr” meaning “big hill.”
